Requirements
A. For a BB-155 Five-year RRV, you must, at the time of application,
- be an Australian permanent resident; or
- be a former Australian citizen who has lost or renounced your Australian citizenship; or
- be a former Australian permanent resident whose most recent permanent visa was not cancelled; and
- have physically lawfully been in Australia as a permanent visa holder for a total of at least 2 years, i.e. 730 days, in the last 5 years.
B. For a BB-155 One-year RRV, you must have physically lawfully been in Australia as a permanent visa holder for less than 2 years in the last 5 years immediately before application, but have substantial, business, cultural, employment or personal ties of benefit to Australia and have not been absent for 5 years or more, unless there are compelling reasons.
NOTE 1. During the 5 year period, any periods during which the applicant held a temporary visa or bridging visa cannot be counted towards the 2 year total (cl.155.212(2)(b).

FAQ 1. I used to hold an Australian permanent visa which was recently expired. Can I apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV)?
Yes, you can be granted an RRV with a 5-year travel facility if you meet the following conditions:
- your most recent visa has not been cancelled, and
- you had been physically in Australia for a total of 2 years in the last 5 years.
If your total stay in Australia is less than 2 years, but can demonstrate you have substantial, business, cultural, employment, or personal ties of benefit to Australia, and have not been absent from Australia for 5 years or more unless there are compelling reasons.
FAQ 2. I was the holder of an Australian permanent visa granted as a dependent son/daughter of my father who has been less than 2 years in Australia in the last 5 years. Am I also eligible to apply for an RRV?
Yes. You will be granted an RRV with a 1-year travel facility unless the remaining remaining travel facility of your father’s RRV is for less than 1 year.
